Untitled - Sarah Desmond

   Untitled
   by Sarah Desmond

Against the window pane I watch the rain hit first a trickle and then quick. Droplet after droplet, each taking its own path down. Together, a rattling symphony.

I am reminded of how during my life I have seen both birth and death — two inevitable experiences of human existence. Everything else in between is uncertainty.

But birth and death? No human can escape it. And how strange it is that the second we enter this life the journey to our exit has already begun.

In deep sleep, time tugs me through the tunnel whether I am eager or not. The color of my hair fading to a grey, the wrinkles growing finer.

And all at once I feel terrified.

      Alone.

        Awake.
