   no god but God

   by Sarah Desmond

When I'm alone, the thoughts consume me.

I think about what it's like to suddenly wake up. Not...waking up on another morning to the familiar scent of dark roast and the sizzling sounds of scrambled eggs. Not...waking up to the sun seeping in between the blinds casting angelic lines across your eyes. Not...waking up to the warmth of a mattress and a roof rooted above.  Not...waking up to the athan calls of your father, the quick pace of your mother, the early chatter of your brothers.

I speak of a real awakening.  When mornings will meet you no more.  Split in two.  Your loved ones mourning your departure.  Your body is ice.  No one will hold your hand.  No one will show you how it's done.  You will do this all by yourself.

The world has distracted you.  You've been holding on to dust.  If you try really hard, you might remember the echo of a time when your soul was among all other souls.  Together we testified to the Oneness of our Creator.  And when it was time for you to make the pilgrimage into the ephemeral, the decaying land, you were able to do so with absolute confidence.  For, in your state of fitra, that confidence dug its roots deep into that testimony.

So remember, as you near the end of this dream, tame your tongue to tremble with the words "la ilaha illallah" "There is no god but Allah."
